God is the Intelligence and Power I experience about me every moment. He is the One who reveals His properties and attributes throughout His book, the Bible, and confirms them by His creation and my own experiences.
God is spirit (John 4:24). I cannot see Him, hear Him or touch Him. No one has ever seen Him. He exists outside the limits of man’s physical senses.
God is a Trinity. There is only one God (Deut. 6:4), however He exists in three forms, each having a personality but with perfect unity. He is God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit (Luke 3:22). The Holy Spirit is a divine Person Who convicts us of sin, teaches us and points us to Christ.
God is omnipresent; He occupies all places in the universe at the same time. He is omniscient; He knows every fact, every being, and every thought. He is eternal. He always has been, He is now, and He always will be. He never changes.
His attributes are limitless but good and perfect. He is absolute truth. He is holy. He is love. He is faithful. He is just. He is jealous. He is sovereign. He lavishes upon us His grace, mercy, beauty, loving kindness, compassion, and forgiveness.
He is the Creator of the heavens and the earth. He holds everything together (Col. 1:17) and maintains all things to accomplish His purposes.
His names are endless and reveal more of His nature and character. He is Lord, the Almighty, Father, Life, Light, I Am, etc.
When we begin to understand His attributes, our response can be nothing less than awe and worship. To call our great God “the man upstairs” or other such trite names is to admit a total lack of understanding of Who He is, or a total disrespect and disregard of His Lordship and Sovereignty.
